The 2005 Bordeaux Train Rolls On

We’ve been taking a slice through our 2005 Bordeaux to get a feel for what we have, and the reviews have been quite good.? It looks like we have a lot of excellent wine to enjoy over the next decade or so, and this bottle adds another very good wine to the rolls.? It seems they got it right when just about everyone who covers wine declared this a “great” vintage, once in a generation.? Have you noticed we’ve had 4 vintages of “a generation” in the last eleven years??? Strange, but very welcome.? More on that in a later blog. ?? I just keep saying that there’s nothing better than buying less expensive Bordeaux in great vintages.? Major value potential there every time.

    Here is today’s subject:

    05hautebergeyWine:? 2005 Chateau Haut Bergey ?????????????????????????????????????????????

    Winery Location:? Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France

Tasted By:?? Neil & Cheri ????????????????????????????Date:??? March 2014

Tasting Notes: ??? – this spent 16 months in new French oak.? It’s a dark ruby red, with just a tinge of orangey amber at the rim.? The fairly intense nose gives up currant and dark fruit, subtle oak, smoky pork fat and a little green pepper.?? On the palate the wine is medium+ in body.? There is more cherry on the palate actually, and the flavor profile is brighter than the nose would have you expect.? Sweet, integrated tannins carry through the long finish.? Nice length to this.? Overall it is very good, almost excellent, but not quite.

Price Point – ? around $25 when we got it, but more like $40+ now.

Would We Buy It?? – it’s not our favorite from the bottles of 2005 we’ve opened recently.? I don’t think we’d stock up on this at $40+.? It is quite good though, and you probably won’t be disappointed if you try one.? A very good, high quality Bordeaux from a great vintage.? There are worse things in the world.

A very good wine.? Not the cheapest bottle you’ll find, but it is 2005 Bordeaux.? We have a few more and will report back on how this evolves further.

    A votre sante!
