Another Great Wine from Nik Weis

We’ve reviewed several wines from Nik Weis over the past few years. You can read about some of them here. Founded in 1947, Nik Weis has become a mainstay in the Mosel region of Germany. They make ridiculously good Riesling. This is yet another.

2018 Nik Weis St. Urbans-Hof Ockfener Bockstein – this vineyard site is in the ancient winemaking town of Ockfen, located Capture2on one of the Saar River’s tributaries. It has a steep, south facing slope. The soil is a hard, gravely slate. This is 100% Riesling, fermented in both large oak casks and stainless steel tanks, using indigenous yeast. Our impressions:

The wine is a light straw in color, with a big nose of honeysuckle and ripe fruits, along with the characteristic petrol note. There is plenty of citrus as well. On the palate this is off dry, presenting a little sweeter than you would expect a Kabinett to be, but just a little. You really get the minerality on the palate, with brisk acid to balance everything out. This is classic German Riesling, clean and long, and really is just a beautiful wine. It also goes great with a wide range of foods. We paired it with some spicy Asian pork. $26 and a great value there, really.

It seems like every time we review a wine from Nik Weis all we do is rave about it. Some things remain the same, and this is another great Riesling.

    A votre santé!
